Forty members of the Temple Sisterhood had left the synagogue just minutes before janitor Eddie Edwards discovered a package outside, leaning against the rear wall of the building. Inside were six sticks of dynamite. The fuse, about 14 feet long, had been lit. But, according to a front page story in the Nov. 22, 1957 edition of The Charlotte Observer, “the flame traveled a few inches over the fuse (before) it apparently went out.”
